Borgo San Giuliano

Magic place in Rimini Center for your relaxing holiday

Borgo San Giuliano is an ancient fishing village with medieval origins (it’s believed to date back to the year 1000), a charming village full of history located within the central hub of Rimini, close to the canal harbour.

Along its cobbled alleys (it is a pedestrian street) it is impossible not to slow down the pace and observe the small multicoloured houses, lovingly restored and embellished with flowers and elegant wrought ironworks. Next to the entrance of many homes are painted ceramic plaques bearing images of historic boats and the name, in Italian and dialect, of the last sailor who owned the property whenever it has been possible to identify it highlighting the past and origins of the property.
Scattered in the alleys and squares there are murals dedicated to Federico Fellini and some scenes from his movies such as ‘Nights of Cabiria’, ‘La dolce vita’, ‘the road’, etc. Fellini and Giulietta Masina loved this village and it’s clear the village wanted to acknowledge it.

Thirty years ago the local inhabitants called the ‘borghigiani’ in Italian, proud to be such, formed the ‘Company de ' borg’, which every two years organises the famous festival ‘Festa de ' borg’: initially this festival was born with the idea of a reunion between friends, but its popularity has increased over the years and is now one of the most popular festivals in the city, offering music, delicious food and a variety of outdoor performances.

On this occasion the local inhabitants open the doors of their houses abandoning any shyness and allowing visitors to have a peak into their family life. Passersby are allowed to enter and explore the small apartments with their unusual architecture.
In 2009 The ‘Company de ' borg’ led the research that helped to identify the last sailors who lived in the village in the mid 50s, for whom the tiles positioned next to many doors were made. This is a sign of recognition due to a community of fishermen and sailors that was so big towards mid-eight hundreds, but that in the last century increasingly disappeared leaving an everlasting mark in the soul of the inhabitants of this place: solidarity, a sense of belonging, acceptance of other traditions and integration among diverse cultures still characterise the people "de ' borg".
